AIAA Propulsion and Energy Forum

I’ve traveled more by air the last 3 weeks than I have ever before, going first to New Mexico for the Spaceport America Cup, Florida for the CRS-15 launch, and now most recently, Ohio for the AIAA Propulsion and Energy Forum in Cincinnati. This trip was with the other twelve interns of the Propulsion Academy to experience two of the three primary days of this conference. Photo Courtesy of AIAA First thing Monday morning was a talk by keynote speaker, Janet Kavandi, a former astronaut of three Shuttle missions. She spoke about SLS and NASA’s future. It ended with some Q&A, and the host asked her what students could be doing if they have interests in joining NASA. She went on to say that they’ve never had a shortage of interested young engineers, so I heard that as we students are expendable. I didn’t exactly appreciate that. July Fun Fly in Argonia, KS.

The first launch of the summer is in the books. It took place this past Saturday, July 20 th , 2019 to coincide with the 50 th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. While an exciting occasion, the wind throughout the day kept many rockets grounded. I made a full weekend out of the trip to Kansas, checking out a university vehicle Friday morning to load up gear and camp out the night before. Because of the payload we were scheduled to fly for Honeywell, I wanted to give ourselves as much time as possible to confirm the vehicle was healthy in the hours leading up to launch. By camping out Friday night, not only did I get to stargaze, but I also set up our gear and workspace on the field and checked battery levels and continuity on our altimeters. It was good peace of mind, and I enjoyed having everything ready to go before the sun even rose on launch day. Our rocket which we named TestArticle_FlightConfig_RevIR ended up weighing 95 pounds (43kg) and reached 11 feet (3.3m) tall ...

Spring 2018

The spring semester is already ending, and I’ll do my best to cover all that I can. Between the OSU Rocketry Team, my senior capstone project, side projects, following SpaceX, and finishing undergrad work, it has been the best semester of college yet. This final semester of my undergraduate coursework consisted of only two classes: my senior design (capstone) course and an aerospace laboratory that has some parallels to the capstone course. Only 7 credit hours has been bliss, and while it is just as busy as taking 15 credit hours’ worth of professional school classes, 90% of my time and work is towards rockets, and I couldn’t be more excited about it. My senior design project was with 9 others, some mechanical engineering majors, some aerospace engineering majors. Most of us were active on the OSU Rocketry Team, and we worked towards winning the 2018 Argonia Cup. We called ourselves the OSU Rocket Squad, a nod towards the quad(copter) we developed to fly aboard our rocket. The...
