AIAA Propulsion and Energy Forum

I’ve traveled more by air the last 3 weeks than I have ever before, going first to New Mexico for the Spaceport America Cup, Florida for the CRS-15 launch, and now most recently, Ohio for the AIAA Propulsion and Energy Forum in Cincinnati. This trip was with the other twelve interns of the Propulsion Academy to experience two of the three primary days of this conference. We left Sunday morning and got situated at the Westin in downtown Cincinnati. Photo Courtesy of AIAA First thing Monday morning was a talk by keynote speaker, Janet Kavandi, a former astronaut of three Shuttle missions. She spoke about SLS and NASA’s future. It ended with some Q&A, and the host asked her what students could be doing if they have interests in joining NASA. She went on to say that they’ve never had a shortage of interested young engineers, so I heard that as we students are expendable. I didn’t exactly appreciate that. Day 2: First Impressions of Austria

Alright so my first few days in Austria have been fantastic. All of my flights went well and I arrived in Graz in the mid-afternoon on Tuesday, August 7 th . I met my Rotary Youth executive officer, Philli, and his son, Laurin. We had to drive quite a ways to their house, about 2 and half hours. Along the way, we moved deeper into the Alps , each mountain getting taller than the one before it. The scenery is just amazing here. We eventually arrived in Knittelfeld, my host town for the year. I was given a tour of the place- the school, the stores, and the swimming facility (we went inside and it is just fantastic with an outdoor 50m pool and an indoor 25m pool). Everything is within easy walking distance throughout the whole town. I am extremely excited! We then drove on to the von Pranckh’s house, or should I say estate. November Launch in Argonia

The last month has been a busy one for OSU’s AIAA High-Power Rocketry Team! After our October launch date, we had a collective meeting as an entire team and shifted into a new direction. Our single group split into multiple teams with each team having a focus in the rocket development process. Those teams are Modeling, Assembly, Electronics, and R&D. Modeling is responsible for designing future rockets using OpenRocket and determining what performance specs we’re looking at for that rocket. Once they’ve come up with the overall design including dimensions and materials, they pass that information along to have those parts ordered. Once the parts have come in, the Assembly Team takes over and puts the whole thing together for a “scratch-built” rocket. Instead of purchasing fins, we bought ¼” plywood and laser-cut our own custom fins. The Electronics Team set up our altimeter bay and tested altimeters and weather probes we included in the rocket.
